Guantanemera

I just read through some of the bloggs and so far no one has mentioned the song One Guantanemera and how it stays around in your head long after the movie was over. I woke up the next morning with that tune in my head and I thought Great, just like some of the grand kids tunes this one just won't go away.
My favorite carector in the film was Gina. She was beautiful and smart she had alot to offer and I found myself rooting for her from the beginning. Aldolfo didn't realize what he had, his abuse to Gina was appearently tipical of the culture and time. Aldolfo showed machoism but then so did Marrieno with his use of many women, at least until he found his true love.
The viewer could easily pull out culture with family, friends and food. Also the salsa music and the cuben cigers.
One thing I found interesting was the story of Olofin. What I got was it rained for thirty days and the only thing that could climb high enough to survive the waters were the children this act cleansed the earth. this story reminds me of Nohahs Ark in the Bible.
I learned reading one blogg that even though cubans drink alot of coffee they don't drink what they raise because of its high quality they drink imported coffee. I feel like if I raise it I would want to drink it.

  1. The song. I thank you for calling it to our attention. Believe it or not, I remember this song being played when I was young. I think one of the folk artists of the US did a rendition of this same song.

The story of Olefin seemed to be the same biblical story of the Ark. Thank you for this. I really enjoyed your take on this movie. Kudos to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I also thought of Noah's Ark when they were telling the story of the rain, floods and the end of immortality. The stories are really one in the same because the earth was flooded to cleanse it because of all the evil towards God. In the movie they needed to get rid of the evil ones and the ones that thought they were above everyone because they knew they would live forever.

I also agree about the song. It is a traditional Cuban song that has a catchy beat and is just fun to listen to. I also like the way they used the song to tell the story throughout the film.

I agree that the film does a good job with the Cuban culture showing us family ties, close friends and even traditions around their funerals.

  3. Your blog cracked me up! How true about that song sticking. Didn't the singing narration remind you of "Something about Mary"?

Also, the story of Olofin...it did have that biblical ring to it, I also thought of that 2009 movie with Nicholas Cage, "Knowing". Clensing the world of all the adult sinners and starting over with the innocence of children. It is a must see.
