The Official Story

A good movie that kept my attention. However I had many questions at the end. Was Gabby Sarah's grandchild? Did Alicia really leave Roberto and Gabby or did she come back? The film was good but gave one a sense of hopelessness not knowing if Gabby's parents were dead and if she had other relatives. Roberto was a lawyer and a businessman while Alicia taught history to high school boys. Anna was Alicia's devoted friend, she told Alicia about being kidnapped and electric prodded. She also told about the missing babies and people. I liked the scene at Roberto's family dinner grandpa talking to the children teaching that honesty was more important than material things. Notice when the men speak at the meal the women stayed silent. Alicia thought about herself when she was a child her parents were killed in a car accident her grandma lied to her and said they were coming home. Alicia was wondering who Gabby belonged to and she said "I have never took anything that did not belong to me in my life."Hopelessness is felt throughout the film like the scene where the women were protesting against the army to bring their missing loved ones home

  1. I also notice that the women were silent at Roberto's family get together. At that time women were required to be silent and not voice their opinions. That is why I had great respect for Alicia's strength to question and investigate the adoption of Gaby. There were many unanswered questions at the end of the film. I saw much hope for the future. Like mentioned in class the women stepped forward to find their families in a time that women were silent. Again, what great strength and hope for the future.

  2. Good Post Annete,
I am like you, we are left with a lot of unanswered questions with regard to Gaby possible being Sara's grand-child. The Official Story does not answer all. But I think it must be assumed that she is based on Sarah and Alicia's meeting where the discussion of Gaby's birth details were revealed.
With regards to if Alicia did or did not stay gone when she left Roberto is left open as well. But the film leads us to believe she left for good with a finality due to his treatment of her and with the discoveries that were made by Alicia about Gaby's coming to her household as a stolen baby from an unwilling mother without a choice.
Finally with regards to the hope and hopeless thing I believe it is always going to be present with war and its abominations. War is not easy, people hope for a better life and for changes. Hopelessness occurs much too often as well when one surrenders their hope because they have been beaten by the tragedies of the war.

  3. Annette, I have to wonder if, Alicia decided she was going to make it her mission to find Gaby's family and reunite them. Maybe even take it a step further to find out exactly what happened to Gaby's real parents. I feel like Alicia had enough of Roberto's abusive ways, by this I mean the mentally abusive ways, until the end of the film. I feel that Alicia was going to make it her duty to bring justice to these families that have been ripped apart. Although Alicia didn't directly have anything to do with how Gaby was obtained, I think she was at least a good enough person to feel guilty that she unlawfully has someone else's child. To me this movie was very disturbing the way that people were treated.
