What a movie, Do you think the kissing was elaborated or they really kiss that much? After a while one might feel like they need a shower. All the women played strong rolls which was great after all the macho ism we have viewed. The bonds among family once again very strong with Hispanic culture. We saw superstition in this film, the community really believed that Irene was dead when they saw glimpses of her as she cared for her sister Paula. The strong Eastern winds were mentioned several times, the peoples superstition believed the winds could blow in evil.
As Raimunda took the opportunity to run the restaurant and put Paco's dead body in the spare freezer, I thought she was going to chop it up and serve it in some barbecue like in the movie Fried Green Tomato's which is my favorite movie of all times.
When Irene tells what really happened the day of the fire to her husband and Augustina's mother I feel this scene brings the mystery to light. I felt bad that Irene knew all along the abuse her husband was doing to his daughter and didn't do anything about it.
Augustina was my favorite, she smoked her weed, cared for the sick, and was a true friend. She wanted so much to know what happened to her mother, but not at the expense of others. She stated "we should wash our dirty laundry at home"
When Raimida and Irene talked and Raimunda said " I hated you for not noticing" and when Irene said "Paula is your daughter and your sister" I just could not image.
This movie was a tribute to women and I enjoyed it very much.

  1. I don't think all of the kissing that took place really happens, then again I don't know. I didn't think Raimunda was going to chop up Paco and serve him to the film crew. I think Raimunda just needed some time to figure out what to do with the body. When she does bury him by the river we remarkably see some compassion, because she buries him by his favorite place by the river. Amazing! I'm not sure that I would feel anything for my husband trying to molest my daughter.
All of the women in this film were very strong, independent women. I was very happy when Irene came back with Sole. I think it was very important that Paula was able to meet her before Raimunda. This way Paula was able to encourage her to go back and talk to her. I realize this must have been very hard for Raimunda to do because of how much anger had built up from years passed.
Irene felt guilty, compassion and was furious at the same time for what happened. Irene finally got to clear her mind and thankfully Raimunda listened. Little Paula is growing up very fast at a young age. She will be just as strong and independent as the other women in this film.
I realy enjoyed this film and would watch it again.

  2. I think that all the kissing does happen in the old families customs. This film captured 3 generations of tragedies. Irene being the top of the line was of the same generation as was Aunt Paula, she as tradition would tell responsible for her care. As a ghost she tended to Aunt Paula as she would have in her old life. Irene had her loyalties but at the same time she was afraid to face her daemons when it came to her daughters torture of incest. It took a long time for Irene to face the truth and Raimunda with what had happened and she was afraid. When Irene finally went back to the village with Sole she had time to think and plan for her reunion with Raimunda. Irene met her granddaughter Paula and fell in love with her and followed her heart back to Raimunda. I think Irene was hurt, confused, and afraid of the truth and it was easier to be a ghost. She did however face all the ugly truths and the women in her bloodline followed suit. They were a very strong group and in the end RETURNED to the family unit supporting and loving one another.

  3. I have to agree about the kissing, it did tend to get a little annoying at times. I do feel, however that it is a tradition within their culture and so I totally respect that. Augustina was a very awesome character, free like the wind in her everyday life except when it came to her mother and her disappearance. I also agree with you about Raimunda's mother knowing about the abuse inflicted by her father and never doing anything about it. Perhaps the father's death was somehow a payback or karma biting him finally for all of the damage he had done to his family. I also have to agree with Lisa (above) regarding why Irene faked her death, she was ashamed and it was just easier for her to pretend that she was a ghost. I believe the women in this film have a great unbreakable bond that can not be broken regardless of the time they had spent apart. 2 thumbs up from me on this film.
